Roman Catholic Archbishop. Palermitan born Antonio Maria Travia frequented the archdiocesan seminary of his native city, where he was ordained priest by Cardinal Luigi Lavitrano on July 11, 1937. Sent to Rome by the said Cardinal to undergo further studies in canon law, he graduated in the matter from the Pontifical Lateran University on January 15, 1942. Back in Palermo, he was soon named chancellor of the Ecclesiastical Sicilian Tribunal and vicar cooperator of the parish of Sant'Espedito. Called to Rome by Cardinal Luigi Maglione, Secretary of State, to serve within the diplomatic service of the Holy See, he was enrolled in the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy on September 1, 1942 and soon assigned to the ordinary section of the Secretariat of State, under Msgr. Giovanni Battista Montini, future Blessed Pope Paul VI, then Substitute of the Secretariat. Personal secretary to the said Montini between 1948 and 1954, on December 10 of the latter year he was named Domestic Prelate of His Holiness. Named counselor within the apostolic nunciature in Austria on February 1, 1959, Pope Paul VI appointed him almoner of the Office of Papal Charities, and electing him to the titular archbishopric see of Termini Imerese, consecrated him himself at Saint Peter's Patriarchal Vatican Basilica on January 6, 1969. Although Termini Imerese was for him simply a titular see, until the end he held strong ties with the Sicilian town, taking possession of his see at the latter's Duomo of San Nicola di Bari on May 19, 1969 and being present there among others, for the solemn transportation of the remains of Blessed Agostino Novello OSA., from Siena to the town on May 19, 1977. Named primicerius of the Archconfraternity of Santa Maria Odigitria dei Siciliani in 1970, Cardinal Maximilien de Furstenberg, Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, assigned him as grand prior of the same Order for Central Italy. Retiring from office December 23, 1989, he was succeeded by Msgr. Oscar Rizzato. Passing away in Rome at the venerable age of ninety two, in accordance with his wishes, his pastoral staff, the mitre used on the day of his ingression at Termini Imerese, a stole, the bull of his episcopal appointment and a precious chalice, were given to the town of his titular archdiocese, where they remain housed to this day in the local museum of sacred arts adjacent to the local duomo. His funeral mass, presided by Cardinal Salvatore De Giorgi, then Archbishop of Palermo, was celebrated at the church of Santa Maria in Traspontina on via della Conciliazione in Rome prior to interment at the local Campo Verano Cemetery. A street has been since named after him at Termini Imerese.
