According to the story that Viola Alexine Hurst's grandfather, William Edward Cox told, Ambrose and Joseph left on a trip to go west to get some land for themselves. This was in approx 1873. I set this date from the fact that my grandfather ran away from home at age 15 (1875) to join a cattle drive, so it was before that date. Also, his brother James Preston was married by the time of this trip. Anyway the brothers were well equipped with wagon, horses and supplies when they left. They wrote home at the various towns along the route and when their letters stopped coming, the parents were worried. They sent James Preston Cox, William and Nathaniel to check on them. James's wife also went along. They traced the route to the last town that they had received mail from and went on for another's day journey. They found a burned-out wagon and two graves beside the road. They felt that their brothers had been ambushed and killed. The boys wanted to dig up the bodies and check and see.

But James's wife was very superstitious & became hysterical, so they finally left without ever knowing for sure.
