Leah Joy White, 85, passed from this life and entered into eternity with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on December 9, 2016 at The Homestead in Knoxville, IA, where she had been a resident for the last 4 years.

Leah was a born in Chariton, Iowa on August 12, 1931 to John and Myrtle Frances Nordeen. She was married to Dean White of Chariton, IA on April 5, 1953. Dean and Leah moved to the farm after their marriage. They raised six children. Leah was a devoted wife to Dean, always helping in any way she could in the farm operation. She stayed home for many years to raise their children. She was a devoted mother. She loved to cook for her family. Her pies, cookies, homemade bread, and sweet pickles were always a favorite. She had a gift of hospitality, and always welcomed visitors to her home with a smile and something special to eat. Leah loved keeping busy with household activities. She enjoyed raising vegetables and flowers, canning vegetables from her garden, hanging clothes out on the line to dry in the fresh air, and sitting in the porch swing and visiting with her children and grandchildren. She taught Sunday School and helped to lead Vacation Bible School at Bethel Church for many years. She was active in the United Methodist Women’s group, and enjoyed participating in mission activities within the church. Leah took great delight in attending her children’s school and sporting activities. As time went by, she became a grandmother and especially delighted in spending time with her grandchildren. She hosted many happy sleepover parties for her grandchildren over the years.

Leah also worked for many years for the Chariton Community School District, first as an elementary school teacher’s aide, and later as a high school guidance office secretary. Leah loved her job, and offered love, support, friendship, and encouragement to many children.

Although Leah was affected by Alzheimer’s Disease later in life, she never lost her sweet and kind disposition. She was always concerned about the welfare of others, always had a kind and encouraging word to say, and was always happy to visit with others. She always wanted to be helpful, and even in the late stages of her illness would routinely tell others that she loved them and would pray for them. Leah loved to sing and could always remember the words to many church songs and hymns.

Leah is preceded in death by her husband, parents, her brothers Jack Nordeen and Clarence (Swede) Nordeen, and her sisters Mildred Brown and Hazel Laffoon. She is survived by her children Gary (Treva) White of Russell, IA, Tom (Jenny) White of Russell, IA, Kenton (Diane) White of Russell, IA, Kathy (Larry) Mitchell of Chariton, IA, Julie (Rocky) McLain of Albany, MO and Ellen (Gary) McComas of Pleasant Hill, IA, and by her sister Vivian Vairo of Chariton. She also is survived by 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family, who will use the donations for a contribution to the Homestead staff, who lovingly cared for Leah during her illness.
