OBITUARY: Lawrence Delmar "Larry" Beck

Lawrence Beck passed away on December 8th following complications from hip surgery. He was born March 6, 1922 in Yakima, WA. He was the oldest of five children born to John and Dora Beck.

He was the great-grandson of an early Yakima pioneer who traveled west in 1865 at the end of the Civil War to homestead what is now the west side of Yakima and who also became the first justice of Yakima County. His family could trace their roots in this country all the way back through the Civil War and the Revolutionary War to the Mayflower.

Larry enlisted in the US Army in July of 1940. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1943, volunteered for the paratroops and was sent to the Philippines to serve in combat with the 503rd Parachute Regimental Combat Team until the end of the war. He landed in Japan with the 11th Airborne Division where he served on occupation duty into 1946.

He returned to Seattle and completed a degree at the University of Washington.

The military recalled him to active duty with the advent of the Korean War. He served as mortar platoon commander in 1951/52 in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division. He was released from active duty in 1952 and honorably discharged as a Captain in 1955.

Larry worked in business for many years at General Electric Credit Corporation in Seattle and at the Old National Bank in Spokane where he was a Vice-President at its headquarters.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Knights of Columbus (4th degree). He was a charter member of the South Hill Senior Center and he has been a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church for 47 years. He also served Gonzaga University as a participant in their Great Teachers program for 18 years.

Larry is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary; his four children, Melia Langdon of Spokane, Leesa (John) Morse of Seattle, Lieutenant Colonial, US Army (retired) Lawrence J. (Celena) Beck of Anchorage AK, and Joan Beck of St. Louis, MO. There are four grandchildren, Valerie (Carl) Gunther and Nicole Beck of Anchorage AK, Sullivan Morse and Margaret Morse of Seattle and 2 great-grandchildren, Veida and Ira Gunther of Anchorage AK.
