On Wednesday night, June 27, 1917, Thecla M. Gerken of Woonsocket, South Dakota, was shot and killed while out for a walk with a friend in Sioux City, Iowa.

Thecla Merle Gerken was born in January of 1894 in South Dakota, to Elizabeth Kogel and German-born Johannes "John" Everhard Gerken.

She had two brothers, Carl Dewey Gerken and Raymond Francis Gerken; and two sisters, Geraldine Elizabeth (Gerken) Flanagan and Lucille Ethel (Gerken) Davy.

Thecla graduated from St. Joseph's School in Woonsocket, SD, in 1913. One of the highlights of her school career was acting in the play “The Rose of Plymouth.”

After graduation she became a school teacher at Cuthbert, South Dakota.

Her funeral was held in the Woonsocket Catholic Church, with burial following in the family plot at the Catholic cemetery on the outskirts of Woonsocket, South Dakota.
