Joan was born March 22, 1941 in Holt, Michigan to Walter C. and Reva B. (Gurd) French and they preceded her in death. On January 4, 1964 she married Harry Anthony Malkin and he also preceded her in death on September 7, 1995.
She was very involved in the Parish Life of St. Ann Catholic church in Cadillac. Joan served as Sacristan, Eucharistic Minister at church and for those who were sick, was a Faith Formation and Religious Education teacher for elementary level students. She was also the leader and facilitator of Children’s Liturgy of the Word on Sundays for preschool students to 5th grade. Joan was an adult RCIA sponsor for new members coming into the Catholic faith community. She assisted at Lakeview Lutheran Manor with church services and visiting the sick and with set up and clean up for coffee and rolls on Sunday and other fellowship times. Joan was also active with Church Bible study and volunteered at the St. Ann School library as well as the Wexford County Public Library.
Joan had worked at the Curiosity Shop in Evart that was owned by her family for eight to ten years. She had moved to Chicago for a short time before moving to Cadillac with her sister, Eva. In Cadillac she worked at Carter’s and Glen’s for many years and McDonald’s. She had served on the Resident Council at Kirtland Terrace for many years. Joan enjoyed crafting and made beautiful, elaborate cards.
She is survived by her son, John W. (Ivy) Malkin of Chicago and a granddaughter, Deanna V. Malkin (fiancé James C. Maloney) of Villa Park, Illinois.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her siblings: Eva Minaga, Marilyn Fuller and William John French.
