Antoine E. "Toni" Burton, 80, of Sierra Vista, AZ, passed away 13 December 2016 in Sierra Vista after a 5-year battle with breast and bone cancer.
She was born on 29 June 1936 in Bad Tolz Germany to Anton Fleischmann and Barbara Kantschuster. She grew up, attended school, and learned her craft as a seamstress in Bad Tolz.
She married Calvert “Papo” Burton (1SG, USA retired) and moved to the United States. As a homemaker and a military spouse she followed Papo to several stateside and overseas assignments around the world. She was a self-taught English speaker.
In 1964 she earned her U.S. citizenship.
Toni was very social, opinionated, and loved to travel. Her favorite hobby and passion was line dancing. She often showed her kindness by sewing special items for family and friends and took pride in her work. Toni was a strong, determined person who as a little girl suffered extreme hunger while surviving in a battered country and a world at war. Perhaps that and her faith is what gave her the strength to fight cancer for many years. With her passing she is again at her beloved Papo’s side.
She is survived by her sons: Kenny of Benton, AR, and Mike of Sacramento, CA; daughters: Sheryl Gunter Roberts of Alexander, AR, and Patricia Flores of Sierra Vista; sisters: Inez Gill of Malvern, AR, and Phyllis Kay Hancock of Ashdown, AR; grandchildren; Eric, Cody, Charity, Cheyanne, Liz, Lilly, and Francine; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Gathering of family and friends will be on Thursday, December 22, 2016, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at Hatfield Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 1:00 pm at Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
