An 18 year old Independence youth died Wednesday morning after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck in North Kansas City. North Kansas City police identified the accident victim as Rick M. Hadden, son of Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Hadden, 612 S. Cedar, Independence. Police said Hadden was riding on Vernon when a lumber truck southbound on Vernon turned to go east on 15th and apparently crossed the northbound lane of the oncoming motorcycle, when the vehicles collided. Hadden later died at North Kansas City Memorial Hospital.

Rick was born in Independence and was a lifelong resident. He was a 1972 graduate of Van Horn High School, and was currently attending the United Electronics Institute. He was a member of the Kansas City Radio Controlled Aircraft Association and the American Academy of Model Aeronautics.

Survivors include his parents, Eugene & Mary Hadden, a half-sister, Mrs. Dorothy A. LaPrest, Florida; a paternal grandfather, Ralph Hadden, Laguna Beach, CA; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lena Miller, Independence, MO.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Carson Chapel and burial will be in the Mt. Washington Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday. The family has asked that memorial contributions be sent to Van Horn High School.

A memorial fund has been set up at Standard State Bank in Memory of Rick M. Hadden. The fund will be used for equipment for the Van Horn High School machine shop. Any donations may be sent to the bank. Memorial to Rick helps Van Horn Machine Shop.

On May 23, 1974 a new dividing head for a milling machine has been presented to Van Horn High School in memory of Rick Hadden, a former student who died last August in a motorcycle accident. A total of $822 was raised in the area in Hadden's memory. Rick had a special regard for the machine shop and for Lester Land, the instructor there.
