Robert D. "Bob" Hinton, (84), died peacefully at his home in Robertsdale, Alabama, on December 7th, 2016 in the company of his loving family.

Born in Mobile, Alabama to William and Eleanor Hinton, he attended Murphy High School before joining the Air Force at an early age. He was stationed in post-World War II Germany where met Irma, his devoted wife of 62 years. Bob worked most of his adult life at International Paper's Mobile Mill repairing and maintaining machinery with his amazing mechanical skills. It was there that he first wore the tan or blue Dickies that became the signature look of this unassuming and down-to-earth man. An exceptional tinkerer around the house, he could repair nearly anything and he took great joy in knowing how much money he was saving by doing it himself. He selflessly used those saved dollars as well as his income to generously help others in need. Well known and beloved by many, he playfully referred to people of all ages as 'young man' or 'young lady' — a practice that won the hearts of nearly every person he had the pleasure to meet.

After his retirement, he and his wife became the proud 'parents' of many animals. They took in stray, injured, and abandoned animals and lovingly nursed them to health. Bob was an avid golfer – rarely missing a chance to play. This was a sport that gave him great joy and, as any golfer will understand, kept him humble. His crowning achievement was the coveted "hole-in-one" in the last months of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Irma Hinton, daughter Ingrid Jackson, son Robert Hinton, Jr., daughter, Ilona Lewis, son Bradley Hinton (Thomas Wood), daughter, Monica Howard (Steve Howard), one grandson, Michael Stephens (April Brill), and three great grandchildren: Ethan, Makayla, and Gabriel Stephens; sisters Betty Joiner, Dot Sawyer, Janie Sawyer, and Mary Freeman (Denson), brothers, George Hinton (Betty), and Eugene Hinton (Mary) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His family will miss him very much.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to everyone for their prayers, for bringing food, and special thanks is offered to Tonya, Julia, and Faye at Comfort Care Hospice for their care and guidance.

The family will receive guests at Hughes Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5-7:00 pm. Burial will be at 1:00pm. on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Mobile Memorial Gardens and a Memorial Service will be held at Saint James' Episcopal Church, Fairhope on Saturday at 3:30 pm. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, Donations in his honor may be made to any organization whose purpose is to benefit animals.
