Jay Matthews, age 57, of Joplin, Mo., passed away on Tuesday December 6, 2016, following a sudden illness.

Jay was born on June 18, 1959 in Markville, La., the son of the late George F. Matthews, Sr. and Hilda (Gaspard) Matthews. He has been a resident of Joplin since 2007.

He worked as a handyman for Acadina Sheet Metal of Brussard, La. He enjoyed off shore shrimping.

He is survived by his mother, Hilda Matthews, Joplin; two brothers, George F Matthews, Jr. of Arnaudville, La., and Tim Matthews and wife Lisa, Monkey Island, Ok.; two adopted brothers, Roger (Amet) Matthews and wife Yvonne of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., and Bobby Matthews and wife Beverly of St. Martinville, La. He was preceded in death by his father, George F. Matthews Sr., a sister, Gail Borrel and a brother, Roger DeDe Matthews.

A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Kim Matthews and Sherril Ross will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Habitat for Humanity in care of the mortuary.
