Kathryn was born to Asa T. Oliver and his second wife, Drucilla Daniel in the San Paulo district of Brazil where several former Confederates from the United States had moved following the Civil War, having been invited by the government of Brazil to cultivate farmland in the Campinas area. The Confederates who moved to this part of Brazil continued to practice slavery and to use slaves for labor in developing their vast plantations. Kathryn's father was killed by one of his slaves in 1873, and shortly thereafter her mother and brother, A.T. Oliver, Jr., returned to the U.S. and settled in Jack County, Texas. Kathryn later married Samuel Johns and had several children.
