4 of rural Galesburg passed away at 2:01 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born December 21, 1961 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the son of James and Mary Ruth Prince Melton. He married Bronlyn Kay Schisler on August 11, 1990 in Abingdon.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Kay; one son, Bradley Melton of rural Galesburg; one daughter, Megan Melton of rural Galesburg; two grandchildren, Jacob Melton and Keegan Melton; his mother-in-law, Patsy Schisler of rural Galesburg; three sisters-in-law, Donna Melton of Valparaiso, Indiana, Teresa J. Schisler of rural Galesburg and Maleta (Kevin) Garland of Kankakee; two nephews, Jeremy (Nicole) Melton of and Ryan (Crystal) Melton; and several foster children including Casey Ashby and family and Shandy Martin and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Jerry Melton and his father-in-law, Bradley Schisler.
Mike graduated from high school in Portage, Indiana. He was an Army veteran. He worked as a cook at several area restaurants and most recently at Sirloin Stockade in Galesburg. He had also worked at Walmart, Farmland and NAIER. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, feeding wildlife, coin collecting, wood working, spending time with his grandkids and he enjoyed cooking with his mother-in-law. He would help anyone with anything they might need. Mike continues to help others as a tissue donor with Gift of Hope.
Cremation will be accorded. To celebrate his life, his family will receive relatives and friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, December 12, 2016 at the First Assembly of God Church Fellowship Hall, 835 W. Martin St. in Abingdon. In honor of his service in the Army, military rites will be conducted at 5 p.m. by the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Abingdon First Responders.
