Monte Dean Lee was born on Monday, the 12th of May 1947, in Ogden, Utah the youngest of the four children of Don Bracken and Evelyn Barbara Stock Lee. Lynon is the oldest, followed by Don, Jeanine and Monte.
Where do names come from? Lynon was created by Mom and Dad by taking the “lyn” from Evelyn and the “on” from Don to form Lynon. One of Dad’s favorite nieces was Toni Taylor who married Dean Baird – Monte’s middle name came from Dean Baird.
His Dad was a great outdoorsman and Monte spent much of his early years camping, hunting and fishing with him. One of the families’ favorite places to go camping was in the Monte Cristo campground in the mountains east of Ogden. The family had many happy times sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows and listening to Dad tell stories and recite poetry.
In Monte’s early years, the family moved around a bit due to Dad’s work. In the summer of 1954 we were living in Richmond, Utah and Monte credits his brother, Don, with saving his life. Dad was working on a farm there and the farmer had cut a deep channel so that water could get to where he needed it for irrigation. The water looked just like a shallow ditch, but was over 6 feet deep. Monte started to cross it and soon found himself over his head and floundering. Don saw him and ran over, but he couldn’t swim either. He slid down the bank into the water, dug his toes into the side and reached as far as he could and managed to get ahold of him. Monte was just 7 years old.
By the time Monte was 9, the folks had bought a home on the corner of 9th North and 7th East in Logan and lived there while he went through the Logan School system, eventually graduating from Logan High.
Monte was an avid Elvis Presley fan, loved his music and collected anything to do with him. This can be seen in his hair and dress style in those early years.
Monte enjoyed making things out of wood and had a shop set up out in his garage where he could build wonderful things.
On November 7th, 1978, he married Dorothy Heath in Pocatello, Idaho. Monte operated an auto mechanic shop in Blackfoot before he began working for Simplot. He worked for Simplot for 36 years and retired in 2010.
Monte loved to spend time with his family.
He was preceded in death by both parents, his sisters, Lynon Byington, Jeanine Hardin, his loving wife, Dorothy a few months ago; granddaughter, Christina Duddy.
Monte is survived by his brother, Don (Gwendolyn Holt) Lee of Ogden, Utah; brothers-in-law, Don Byington, Ralph Hardin both of Blackfoot; children, Delina (Michael) Duddy, Deana Lee, Jeremy Lee and Jason Lee all of Pocatello, Trena Carillo of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Christopher and Caitlyn Duddy, Joshua Marsh, Anthony Moss and Britt Carillo; as well as many nieces and nephews and friends.
Monte’s family will receive friends at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, December 17th at Downard Funeral Home, 241 North Garfield Ave., Pocatello, Idaho. Services will follow at 1:00 with interment at Mountain View Cemetery in Pocatello.
