BRIAN DOUGLAS POWELL, 48, of Des Moines (Formerly of Menlo) died Monday, December 5, 2016. A Memorial Mass for BRIAN DOUGLAS POWELL will be held Saturday, December 10th at 10:00am at All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart. Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart has the arrangements.

A Luncheon will follow services at the church.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 9th from 6:00pm-9:00pm at All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brian Powell Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of the Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, IA 50250.

Obituary for Brian Douglas Powell

Brian Douglas Powell, 48, of West Des Moines, formerly of Menlo, passed away suddenly Monday, December 5th. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Friday, December 9, 2016 at All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart. A Memorial Mass will be held 10:00 A.M Saturday at All Saints Catholic Church with a luncheon following the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brian Powell Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO box 246, and Stuart Iowa 50250.

Brian was born September 24, 1968 in Guthrie Center, Iowa to Douglas Eugene Powell and Cheryl Ann Christensen Powell. He was raised in Menlo and graduated from Stuart-Menlo High School with the class of 1987. While in high school, Brian excelled in baseball, basketball and football. Following graduation, Brian enrolled at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska and played basketball there before transferring to Grandview where he also played basketball. Brian finished his schooling at Upper Iowa where he received his degree in Education. He taught and coached volleyball and baseball at Van Meter before being employed at Nationwide Insurance. Brian was united in marriage to Val Reason on May 3, 1997 and together they lived in Minnesota for 5 years before being transferred back to Des Moines. They later divorced in 2004. Brian then married Nikki Parker in July of 2006 and together they became the proud parents of one son, Wyatt. They later divorced in 2010. Following Nationwide, Brian was employed at American Family Insurance Company in Des Moines as an insurance adjuster. In 2009, Brian met his best friend and companion, Julie Compiano and together they lived in West Des Moines. Brian was an avid golfer and enjoyed the time he was able to spend with them on the course. He also enjoyed bowling, dinning out, playing cards, traveling, working out and spending time with family and friends. Brain and Julie loved to hit the bike trails and recently started riding with a group of friends in Des Moines. He also enjoyed getting together twice a year with his hometown friends playing a round of golf and playing cards until wee hours in the morning. Brian, was a proud father, and enjoyed spending every minute he could with Wyatt. He never missed a game or an important school event even if that meant driving to northern Iowa twice month.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Verle and Wanita Christensen, paternal grandfather, Irwin E. Powell, uncle, Joe Powell and aunts, Karen Dupey, Debbie Powell, Sandi Smeltzer and Bev Campbell.

Brian leave behind, his son, Wyatt Powell of Luana, Iowa: mother, Cheryl Powell of West Des Moines, father, Douglas (Janice Gilham) Powell of Menlo, brother, Brent (Mandy) Powell and their children Gunner and Cerria of Menlo, companion, Julie Compiano and her children, Sam, Nick and Chris, grandmother, Teresa Powell of Menlo and a host of uncles, aunts and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
