Funeral services for Matthew "Matt" Mackey, Sr. were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 30, 1972, in St Columbkille’s Church at Varina. Mr. Mackey passed away Thursday evening at Pocahontas Community Hospital following several years of failing health. Father Charles Bormann officiated at the funeral mass which was sung by the adult choir of the parish. Servers were Mr. Mackey’s grandsons Jim Goedert, Bill and Ron Mackey of Varina, Casket bearers were all nephews; Leonard riley, Mark Fitzgerald, and Albert Miller of Fonda, John McGowan of Omaha, Jim O’Brien of Fort Dodge and Jim Mason of Marquette, Iowa. Interment was in Mount Zion Cemetery at Fonda.
Matthew Mackey was born August 2, 1890, at Fonda the fourth son of Garrett and Bridget Mackey. Educated in the rural schools west of Fonda, he spent his entire life in the Fonda and Varina vicinity. February 27, 1922, he was united in marriage to Loretta O’Brien at OLGC in Fonda. Their fiftieth wedding anniversary was quietly celebrated earlier this year. To this union were born eleven children: Bill, lost in WWII on a troop ship, Matt Jr. and John of Varina; Mrs. Rose Kirsch of Rockwell City; Henry of Laurens; Mrs. Leo (Harriet) Goedert of Varina; Mr. Dennis (Loretta) Wolf of Fort Dodge; Gene of Varina ; Richard, killed in a accident in 1960; and Mrs. Bill (Pat) Booge of Fort Dodge. 24 grand children also survive. An infant son also preceded him in death as did his parents and brothers and sisters: John, Garret, Henry, Bill, Mrs. Margaret Strauss and Mr. Ellen Goshey. He is survived by two sisters Mr. Lizzie Larson of Storm Lake and Mrs. Mary Cooke of Fonda as well as by many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
A farmer all his life before moving to a home in Varina in 1938, Mr. Mackey was a member of St. Columbkille’s parish. He spent most of the last years in nursing homes.
Mourners came from the communities of Pocahontas County as well as from Fort Dodge, Omaha, Marquette, Emmetsburg, Chicago, Storm Lake, Iowa City, Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin; Sioux City, Albert City, Newell, Sac City, Albert City, Newell, San City, Lytton and Rochester, Minn. The Mahaney Funeral Home of Fonda was in charge of arrangements.
