Danish archbishop. He belonged to the House of the Whites (Hvide) and studied at the University of Paris in France. He was Archbishop of Lund and also titular 1304-1310 Archbishop of Riga and Terra Mariana. He was the son of Danish royal court official Thorbeorn Hvide and Cecilia Skjalmsdatter. As John I he was also Prince-Archbishop of Bremen 1310-1327. He was heavily involved in a major struggle in the Danish church in the latter part of the 13th century. He was an acclaimed expert jurist on canon law. His Hvide clan was controversial in connection with the assassination of King Eric V Clipping of Denmark in 1286. Considering his possible role in the regicide his major donation Roskilde Cathedral has been taken as an atonement. He had been given Selsø Castle but was living in Avignon, France when he died.
