Olympic Gold Medalist. Born Paul Bert Elvstrom, he was a world champion yachtsman who captured four consecutive individual gold medals from 1948 to 1960. He competed in eight Olympic Games from 1948 to 1988 and won the gold in 1948 (Firefly class), 1952, 1956, and 1960 (Finn class). He also competed in and won world championships in seven different sailing classes from 1957 to 1974. He was an innovator in both developing new sailing equipment and training techniques. In 1996 he was chosen as the "Danish Sportsman of the Century". He was among the first six inductees into the ISAF Sailing Hall of Fame in 2007.
