Joseph Robert Adair Jr, 94, of 201 Parkview Drive, Laurens, South Carolina, died on Monday, April 19, 2004, at Laurens County Hospital.

Born in Renno, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Joseph Robert Adair Sr and Annie Mae Copeland Adair. He was a 1932 Graduate of Clemson University, and he served as a Captain in the US Army during World War II. He retired in 1965 from the US Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service after 33 years.

Since his retirement, Joe farmed and developed residential property in Laurens, SC. He was active in the community, serving as President of the United Way and as County Chairman for IPTAY (Clemson athletic fundraising). He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Laurens, and was a longtime Rotarian. Most recently, he had been involved in the establishment of an Outdoor Educational Center which provides on-site and hands-on educational opportunities for the school children of Laurens County, South Carolina.

He was predeceased by three brothers, T Cecil Adair Sr, S Watts Adair and F Copeland Adair; a nephew, F Copeland Adair Jr; and a great-nephew, John T Adair. He is survived by two nephews, Philip S Adair, of Laurens, and Thomas C Adair Jr, of Greenville; two nieces, Mary Adair White, of Rock Hill, and Cecilia L Adair, of Spartanburg; two great-nephews, Donald J White, of Rock Hill, and Michael J White, of Pulaski, Kentucky.; and four great-nieces, Keleigh L Barker, of Greenville, SC, Elizabeth Ingra Adair, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Samantha Joyce Adair, of Travelers Rest, SC, and Ashley Dawn Adair, of Travelers Rest, SC.

Visitation: Today, April 20, 2004, from 7 to 9 pm at the Kennedy Mortuary in Laurens, SC. The family is at the home of Philip Adair, 205 Lake St, Laurens.

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at 11 am at Rosemont Cemetery in Clinton, SC, with Kennedy Mortuary in charge.

It is the wish of Mr Adair that flowers be omitted, and that any memorials be made to the Joe R Adair Outdoor Education Foundation, PO Box 66, Laurens, SC 29360.
