Nellie Hansen Peterson Huffman immigrated from Sweden and owned a Ferry Boat crossing on the Columbia River in the early 1900's. Nellie's name and dates listed on this memorial are based on info from her death certificate. The 1900-1920 Census' show Nellie's birthplace as Sweden, but her birth years range from 1852 to 1857. In later years her daughter, Martha listed her mother Nellie's birthplace as Denmark (perhaps confusing her mother's place of birth with her Father's).

Nellie and her husband Frank Peterson immigrated to the US sometime before the birth of their daughter, Martha Hazel "Mattie" Peterson in Rochester, Minnesota on 1 Mar 1882. The family relocated from MN to Steven's County in WA state before 1893. Family lore says that Nellie was a camp cook, while her husband Frank worked as a Logger. It is unknown whether Frank Peterson was killed after being thrown from a horse near Spokane, WA, or if the marriage was terminated in some other way. Vital records show that Nellie Peterson was married on 13 Dec 1893 to Henry John "Harry" Huffman in Spokane, WA. The 1900 Census shows Nellie living with her 2nd husband, Harry Huffman, her daughter Mattie (from Nellie's 1st marriage to Frank Peterson) and granddaughter, Cora Hults (later named Elaine Courtney). In 1901, Nellie invested some of the money she and her husband had received in mining and she became the sole owner of a Ferryboat crossing on the Columbia River near Bossburg in Steven's County, Washington. The 1910 Census lists Nellie as widowed & living with her granddaughter Cora (Elaine) in Marcus, Steven's, Washington and occupation as a Farmer of fruit and vegetables. In the 1920 Census, Nellie lived in Spokane, WA where her granddaughter Cora, now "Elaine Du Val" also lived with her friend Lily Courtney Snow's family.

Nellie's death certificate states that she moved in 1927. Family knew that she was with her granddaughter Elaine in the Los Angeles area. The informant for Nellie's death certificate was listed as Lily C. (Courtney) Anderson (nee Snow), the same friend where Nellie's granddaughter, Elaine (Cora) Courtney lived with Lily's family in the 1920 Census. It is unclear as to why Nellie's cremains were left unclaimed by her granddaughter Elaine, or her friend Lily C Anderson, who was the informant on the death certificate. Elaine disappeared after her Grandmother's death.

Unfortunately, when Nellie's daughter and grandchildren in Washington State were told of her passing, it was claimed that Nellie's cremains were buried at a Cemetery in Los Angeles, rather than left unclaimed at Forest Lawn Cemetery (Many thanks to Chris Mills who originally created a memorial for our dear Great Grandmother in 2012. It was transferred to me, but it has recently disappeared from FindaGrave.com, thus the new entry).

At this point Nellie's family will be unable to claim her cremains without a California Supreme Court Order. In normal circumstances, the children and/or grandchildren are the only ones who can legally relocate a loved one to another burial location. Unfortunately, Nellie's only child Martha passed in 1950 and the last of Nellie's grandchildren passed in 2007. We learned of her location in 2014. In the meanwhile, we are working on the documentation needed to prove our relationship to Nellie so that we pursue the required avenues to release her cremains.

It is our greatest hope that Nellie will someday be able to be interred with her only child, Martha Peterson Botts near Seattle, WA. It is heartbreaking to now know that she has been all alone for so many years in the unclaimed cremains area of such a beautiful cemetery.
