US Navy BM3-Boatswains Mate 3rd Class, Peter Paul Blasko Jr, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Southern Pines.

US Navy Boatswains Mate 3rd Class Peter Paul Blasko Jr, was a member of the Navy, BM3 Blasko served our country until November 8th, 1968 in Kontum, South Vietnam. He was 23 years old and was married. It was reported that Peter died from a friendly fire accident. His body was recovered. BM3 Blasko is on panel 39W, line 036 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 2 years.

In November 1968 PCF-89 operated out of Qui Nohn. On the night of 08 November the boat's 81mm mortar exploded, apparently as the result of an accidental double loading, killing the boat officer and two crewmen and severely wounding a third crewman. One of the dead was BM3 Peter P. Blasko Jr, Naval mortars, unlike their infantry counterparts, are not fired by dropping rounds into the tube, where they strike a firing pin and are immediately launched. The naval mortar round is inserted into the muzzle, as with the infantry version, but the gunner decides when to fire and does so with a conventional trigger.

I can't remember your face but the name I will never forget. Seeing your name on a KIA list on the PCF web page took me back to a time best forgot. I want to thank you for what you did, and I will never forget. Walter Weddell.

I was an aquaintance of Barry and his parents. You had already gone in the service and I was working in Point-O-Woods with your Mom and Pete. I cried at your funeral but the most heartbreaking thing was seeing your parents in such pain. I still pray nightly for you and Rich Dell Arena. God bless you both, God bless you all. I'm 55 now and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't wonder why I'm here. God bless you and your family. Bob, I'm sorry it took so long to find you. Bob(Ting)McAuliffe Jr, Salisbury, NC, 28144.
