He was the son of Ben L. and Anna Griffin Gates. On Dec. 1, 1979, he married Gladys R. Howard, who survives. He was the president of the D and G Enterprises, warehouses and storage company in Columbus, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the St. Columba Catholic Church and retired in 1985 after 45 years with Cummins Engine Co., where he was a director of national accounts service. He was also a member of the Harrison Lake Country Club, the Kyana Antique Auto Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the Society of Automotive Engineers.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one brother, John E. Gates, one sister, Suzanne Coleman and one niece, Colleen Coleman, all of Columbus, Ind.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Columba Catholic Church, Columbus, Ind., with the Rev. Joseph N. McNally and the Rev. Stephen Banet officiating.
Burial will be in the Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus, Ind.
Visitation will be at the Reed and Jewell Funeral Home, Columbus, Ind., from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.
A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
The family suggests that memorials go to the St. Columba Catholic Church or to the Bartholomew County Area Hospice.
