Phillip Anton Matson, 10 July 1927 - April 19, 2015
Phillip Anton Matson, 87, of Mount Prospect, Illinois, died April 19, 2015 @ 6:55 P.M. at Northwest Community Hospital, from complications of a stroke suffered April 9, 2015. Phillip was born July 10, 1927 in Black Hawk, Colorado, the son of Anton Matson and Elizabeth Louise Thompson. He was educated in Black Hawk. Served his country in Korea and was honorable discharged in 1946. He married Mildred (Midge) Woodby, October 2, 1948 in Idaho Springs, Colorado. Phillip and Madge spent their 56 years of marriage in Chicago Illinois where they were members of the Wicker Park Lutheran Church and Concordia Lutheran Church. During that time Phil was a welder by trade and retired from the Chicago Police Department, July 10, 1992. Phil enjoyed Boy Scouting, Pool, Miniature Golf and was a life Long Cubs Fan. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers; step father and wife Midge. He is survived by three sons; Mark Phillip Matson (Sarah) of Dublin Ireland, Paul Wayne Matson & Phillip Anton Matson Jr. of Chicago Illinois; two grandchildren; Niall & Rosie of Dublin, Ireland; brother Linold Begg of Central City Colorado; sister Catherine Monahan (Pat), of Herndon Kansas; brother Danny Begg of Wichita Kansas; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorial Service will be conducted by Rev. Nicholas J. Zook, May 2, 2015 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 3855 N. Seeley Ave, Chicago Illinois. Cremains Private with Family Members.

Phillip Anton Matson, born in Black Hawk Colorado, July 10, 1927 in the Krell house to Anton Matson and Elizabeth Louise Thompson. His father Anton died at the age of 39 of the Black Lung disease, while Gold mining. Phil had numerous jobs, heading sheep on Dory Hill, washing dishes in the Toll Gate in Central City, stacking ice in the warehouse at the Espey Ice Company in Rollinsville and trimming trees with his Uncle Joe in Boulder. He worked with his Uncle Grant Kirts at the Fitzsimmons Military Hospital in Denver, delivering mail by bicycle and weeding the irrigation ditches. He built a ramp for May West when she Stared in the play “Diamond Lil” in Central City. He was the Teller House Gardner and helped build the stage addition on the Opera House. Phil joined the Army, Sep 1945 and served in Korea in the signal corp., stringing communication wires. When released in 1946, worked a short time with brother Fred and Uncle Joe for Weyerhaeuser Plywood in Oregon, and tool crib attendant for the Boeing Company in Seattle, then returned home to Colorado. In 1948 he met and married Mildred (Midge) Woodby Oct. 2, 1948 in Idaho Springs Colorado. They lived in Black Hawk until 1949 then moved to Chicago Illinois, where they spent 54 years of marriage, raised three sons, Mark, Paul and Phillip, while attended the Wicker Park Lutheran Church. Phil was a welder by trade and retired from the Chicago Police Department July 10, 1992. When his wife Midge preceded him in 2004, he moved to Mt. Prospect Illinois and joined the Concordia Lutheran Church. Phil enjoyed Scout Master in the Boy Scouts, Miniature Golf, Church & Church activities and was a life long Cubs fan. He suffered a stroke April 9, 2015 and died of complications, April 19, 2015. He was preceded in death by his Parents; Three Brothers; Step Father; and wife Midge. Services conducted by Rev. Nicholas J. Zook of Concordia Lutheran Church.
