He was a German military officer who served in the German Army during World War I and in the Luftwaffe during World War II. He was promoted to the rank of General der Flieger (General of the Air). He served for most of World War II as the head of German Air Force organization, armament, maintenance, and supply. He attempted to implement the expansive Nazi war plans but suffered from heavy combat losses of materiel and men. After the war and being taken prisoner, he was chosen as leader of the high-ranking prisoners of war at the British Prisoner of War Camp (Camp 198) on the outskirts of the town of Bridgend, South Wales.
