LEBANON, VA-Ms. Susan (“Sue”) Alexander Greer, 77, of Lebanon, Virginia, died December 4, 2016, at Bristol Regional Medical Center with family and close friends by her side.

Born August 3, 1939, Susan grew up in Princeton, West Virginia, where she graduated from Princeton High School in 1957. She briefly studied nursing at Montreat College in North Carolina before receiving her Bachelor of Science in social work from Concord College (now Concord University) in Athens, West Virginia. After her first marriage to James A. Fields, Jr., she eventually relocated to Lebanon, Virginia, where she remained for most of her adult life.

Susan dedicated both her life and her career to helping others. Her professional service included social work at the Department of Social Services in Lebanon, Virginia; many years as a counselor for juveniles at Beaumont School for Boys near Richmond and Blackford Juvenile Detention Center near Honaker; and service as a counselor for adult prisoners and their families at the Appalachian Learning/ Correctional Center. After her retirement from the Virginia Department of Corrections, Susan continued to serve others through work in her church and community and by helping to care for the aging family members of her second husband, Charles Greer.

An active member of Lebanon Community Fellowship until the onset of a long illness, Susan was known as a woman full of generosity, compassion and faith who helped those in need, constantly prayed for others and always shared a warm, gentle smile. She served as Registrar for Disciplined Order of Christ (D.O.C) retreats, where she fellowshipped and prayed with long-time friends from around the region each year for more than 30 years. In addition to church activities, she enjoyed reading, spending time with her grandchildren, and traveling. From 2010-2015, Susan lived with her daughter and granddaughters in southwestern China and in Santiago, Chile. She spent her last year at her daughter’s home in Bristol, Tennessee, under the attentive watch of her beloved caregiver Carmen Justiniano.

Susan is preceded in death by her mother Ms. Mildred (McNutt) Sutton, her father Charles L. Sutton and her second husband, Mr. Charles Preston Greer. She is survived by her daughter Mary Sue Fields and her three granddaughters Rosemary, Sophia and Catherine Grace; by the families of her three loving stepdaughters Teresa Owens, Pamela Wooten, and Charlene Grisby of South Carolina; by her first husband and lifelong friend James A. Fields, Jr. of Lebanon; by her brothers-in-law Dean and Giles Fields and sister-in-law Wanda Fields, who always treated her as one of their own; and by her cousins Sarah (McNutt) Parker and Cissy, Don, Andrew and Alex Howell of Nokesville, Virginia.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, December 8 at 2 p.m. at Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon, Virginia with Pastor Bill Price officiating and family and friends serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Ketron Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in the name of Susan Greer to the Alzheimer’s Association (act.alz.org) or Dementia Society of America (dementiasociety.org) in order to advance research on dementia-related illnesses or to Lebanon Community Fellowship.
