María del Pilar de León y Barcelo was born at Arispe, Sonora, New Spain (México). She was the daughter of Martín de León and María Concepción Barcelo. María married alférez José Joaquín Moraga y Gaona* at Santa Rosa de las Fronteras, Sonora, about 1764. María accompanied her husband to Alta California with Anza in 1775-76. María died at San Francisco and was buried in the mission cemetery on October 19, 1808 (SFD Death 0....).

* José Joaquín Moraga y Gaona was born at Mission Guevaví, Sonora (now Arizona) where his father was serving as an escolta. He was the son of José Moraga and María Gaona. He may have been related to Lieutenant José Ignacio Moraga, who commanded the Tucson Presidio in the 1790's. Lieutenant Moraga founded and was still serving as the commander at San Francisco Presidio when he died on July 13, 1785. He was buried in the Presidio Chapel July 15, 1785, but later reinterred to Mission San Francisco de Asís in 1791.
