Helen was the wife of Harvey Penick, who died in April 1995.

Helen was a sweet woman with youthful pluck, brilliant eyes and soft white hair. She was small, and she seemed always to smile radiantly. Her health was not so good when we met, but Helen struck me as someone who appreciated her lot in life, and if something was bothering her, she didn't show it, at least not while I was in her presence. Her apartment at Westminster Manor was neat and organized. I think she was proud of her place.

Helen's vision was going, I recall. But she could remember — vividly — how she and Harvey met, their courtship, and their many years together.

Her full obituary, which doesn't begin to tell the story but will have to do, is as follows:

Helen Holmes Penick, age 101, passed away on December 30, 2006.

She was born in Grayson County, Whitesboro, Texas, on October 18, 1905, to Reverend E.H. and Jennie Holmes. She was married by her father to Harvey Penick on December 27, 1928, in Jacksonville, Texas.

Harvey preceded her in death on April 2, 1995.She always lived her life to the fullest, no matter her age. She loved people and she was forever young in spirit. Her smiled transformed the room.

She is survived by one son, Tinsley Penick and wife Betty Ann of Austin, Texas; and one daughter, Kathryn Powell of Brady, Texas. She had four grandchildren, Lee Ann Penick, Gene Jones, Kirby Powell, Jana Davis and husband George; seven great-grandchildren, Joshua, Kelton, Kaylee, Aaron, Cory, Katie and Sarah; and three sisters, Kathryn Roberts, Janette Gillespie, and Bobbie Hurt.

As Harvey said in his Little Red Book, "Thank you, Helen". We say "Thank you, Momma".

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Christopher House, Hospice of Austin, and Westminster Manor for the care and support she received in her last days. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. and services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at the Smith Chapel of Riverbend Church with Dr. Gordon Smith officiating. A reception will follow. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 p.m. at Austin Memorial Park.
