Maj. Michael L. Mundell of Brandenburg, Ky., went to high school in Pennsylvania where he was a 1977 graduate of Canon-McMillan High School in Canonsburg. He graduated in 1981 with a history degree from Washington and Jefferson College in Washington. He then served 10 years in the Army as a tank officer in Kentucky and Germany. Mundell was working as a civilian contractor to the Army when the Iraq war broke out and volunteered to return to active duty. The military took him up on the offer. Michael served 11 years in the Army before rejoining in November 2005. He had been working with other soldiers looking for improvised explosive devices and his main duty was helping train the new Iraqi army. Michael was a member of the VFW and coached youth soccer, baseball and football in Meade County for several years. In addition to his wife, he leaves four children. He was 47.
