Andy graduated from Parkland High School. While attending Davidson County Community College, he worked as a regular part-time broadcast engineer for WXII television. An avid ham-radio operator, Andy designed, built and ran Forsyth County's first 2 Meter repeater service, which bore his call sign, WA4GIC, for many years. He was founder and owner of Red Barn Data Center (RBDC.com), the first Internet service provider in Forsyth County. Andy experienced kidney failure in 1978. His 23-year survival on dialysis was a remarkable testament to his determination. He died at the Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness.

His parents are Thomas J. Pitts and Catherine Williams Pitts. Andy was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Reynold Pitts. The family also included a nephew, Jonathan B. Pitts of Orlando, FL, and a first cousin, Tracy W. Perez of Austin, TX. Andy died at the Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. The memorial service was held on Oct. 18, 2001, at Memorial Funeral Chapel, Winston-Salem.
