The son of Robert & Susan (Row) Sentman, in 1860 he was a laborer living with and/or working for the H. L. Frantz family in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, his pension index claims he first served with Co. M, 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry, but he is not found in Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file, or the company register by any spelling variant. He is known to have enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 10, 1865, as a private with Co. K, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, but deserted June 30, 1865. In the 1890 Veterans Schedule, he claimed he enlisted with the 79th Pennsyvlania in September 1861 but lists no discharge date. On October 9, 1890, he applied for a disability pension but was denied.

He married Elizabeth Spickler ca. 1865 and fathered George L. (b. 07/03/65), Mary A. (b. @1869), Ella (b. @1874), Charles Ross (b. 05/14/75), and David Frank (b. @1880). His obituary in the Lancaster News-Journal claims he died at the age of fifty-eight and uses "A" for his middle initial while online family trees variously report "W" and "F" and his pension index uses "H."
