ames G. "Jim" Payton Jr., 95, died Dec. 2, 2016, at The Heritage of Overland Park. He was born Nov. 3, 1921, in Hutchinson, to James G. and Edith Elsie (Ringberg) Payton Sr.

Jim graduated in 1941 from North High School in Wichita and attended Wichita State University, until World War II started.

Jim was very proud of his military service, serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945. Jim was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery. He served in some of the deadliest battles of war, fighting the Japanese, starvation and disease in the jungles of the islands on Guadalcanal and Tarawa in the South Pacific Ocean.

After the war, Jim opened Payton Optical, which he owned from 1948 to 1986. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

On Dec. 23, 1944, he married Phyllis McBride in Los Angeles, Calif. She died May 23, 1993. Survivors include: daughter, Jan Jabara and husband Larry of Leawood; son, Greg Payton and wife Paula of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Chris Grant and wife Brooke, Cory Jabara and wife Diane, Morgan Starkweather and husband James, Grady Payton and wife Brooke, Samantha Rose and husband Evan, and Crosby Payton; eight great-grandchildren; and good friend, Erma Mayfield. He was preceded in death by: his parents and sisters, Clytie Seymour and Billie Grout.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Michael L. McGuire officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Honor Guard. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present to greet friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the Reno County Veterans' Memorial, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
