Evelyn Hulme Horton
(March 23, 1932 - December 2, 2016)

Evelyn Horton passed away December 2, 2016 following a short illness. Born March 23, 1932 in Elbert County, Georgia, she is predeceased by her parents, Victoria Burdette and James Madison Hulme and her late husband of almost 62 years, Bennett Horton of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Evelyn was also preceded in death by a beloved grandson, Brian Bowling.

Evelyn was proud of her RN/BS degree and her work in the nursing profession. Along with her husband, Bennett, she was a medical missionary in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). She has also worked as a psychiatric nurse as well as a cardiac nurse. Evelyn joined the United Methodist Church during her wedding ceremony and had a life long passion for addressing social issues through the Connectional Church.

She has served on the boards of multiple United Methodist institutions including Asbury Acres Retirement Center, Holston United Methodist Home for Children, Church Street UMC Senior Day Care Center, UT Wesley Foundation, the Conference Board and the Board of Trustees for Hiwassee College. She has served as a delegate to the UMC national
conference and as a delegate to the UMC international conference.

She began The Friends of the Library at Hiwassee College and spent many years teaching confirmation classes at Church Street UMC. Working to serve God and improve life for others has been her lifelong passion—she truly had a servant’s heart.

Left behind to mourn Evelyn are her two daughters, Belinda (Michael) Bowling and Melanie (James) Trotter and one son, Bennett F. Horton, Jr. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Joseph (Sara) Bowling, Justin (Kristi) Bowling, Bethany (Alan) Forbes, Bennett (Nakita) Horton III, William (Deidre) Horton and Victoria (Jordan) Gaines. Evelyn also leaves behind 5 precious great-grand children:
Jackson Bowling, Troy Forbes, Samuel Bowling, Carter Bowling, and Raleigh Forbes. Evelyn built close relationships with all of her extended family but leaves behind a very special nephew, Doug (Gail) Hulme, who resides in Knoxville and has been a great friend and support to Evelyn.

Burial and a grave side service will take place on Tuesday, December 6 at the Fulbright Cemetery (Rogers Cove Road) in Lake Junaluska, N.C. at 3:00 o’clock. A memorial service will be held at Church Street United Methodist Church on December 7 at 2:00 o’clock.
