Velma Maxine Warren, 85, of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away peacefully at Providence Horizon House, where she was lovingly cared for during the past two years.

Velma was the second of four children born to Mamie and Grant Ferrier in Crawford, Colo. She graduated from Crawford High School in 1949.

In 1951, Velma married John Todd Jr. and they had four children. John was an Army officer and military life took them to different posts around the United States and Europe before the last transfer to Alaska in 1967.

After they divorced, Velma was married to Joe Warren from 1975 to 1981.

She then met Pius Schaffner and they polkaed, waltzed, fished, built a cabin and then danced more, until he passed in 2011.

Velma had many interests. She was an amazing seamstress, loved flowers and kept a beautiful garden. She traveled to many exotic locales. Velma was an avid outdoors woman and enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping and hunting. She was a wonderful cook: her lasagna and apple pie were always favorites.

She worked for the Anchorage School District from 1972 until her retirement in 1996, at Wendler Middle School, then Airport Heights Elementary. She enjoyed outings with her co-workers long after retirement.

Velma's parents, Grant and Mamie; and brother, Lilborn Ferrier, all of Colorado, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her brother, Dellis Ferrier; and sister, Wilma Jackson, both of Colorado. She is also survived by her four children, Edward Todd of Palmer, Alaska, Gary Todd (Sue) of Kasilof, Alaska, Jane Todd of Anchorage and Wayne Todd (Carrie Wang) of Anchorage; eight grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Velma will be deeply missed by all those she leaves behind.

Her remains will be scattered around her favorite places in Alaska and in Crawford, Colo., on the hillside, with her parents.

A celebration of life will be held at Providence Horizon House, 4140 Folker Street, on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, from 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or to Providence Horizon House.

Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
