Helen S. Sharp Casteel, 88, Independence, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at the Monterey Park Nursing Center.

Mrs. Casteel was born Jan. 22, 1912, in Camden, Mo., moving to the Fairmount area of Independence in 1948. On Aug. 26, 1943, she married Rolla William Casteel, who preceded her in death. She was one of the top seamstresses for Nelly Don's Dress Factory, and during her last years there, she worked on salesman samples. She retired in 1977 from the Sugar Creek cafeteria and Fairmount Elementary.

She had been a member of the Camden Methodist Church and was a leader of the 4H Girls Club. She was very active in Neighborhood Council 1, and had been a member of Mount Washington Baptist Church since 1950.

Her survivors include a son, Carl, and a daughter, Janet, who she and her husband adopted on Aug. 19, 1954.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road. Chapel. Burial will be in Sunny Slope Cemetery, Richmond, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Baptist Children's Home, 11300 St. Charles Rock Road, Bridgeton, Mo. 63044-9969.
