We are saddened to share the loss of our Mom, Mrs. Shirley Ruth Johnston Smith of Concord who died Monday, November 14, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family.
Shirley was born February 14, 1934 to Clyde and Bessie Thompson Johnston. She graduated from the former Odell High School in 1952. She was a lifetime member of Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church and was always active in the work of her church as long as her health permitted it. She was the recipient of the Presbyterian Lifetime award in 2008. She enjoyed visiting homebound members of the church, cooking, (especially sugar cookies), genealogy, her computer and E-mailing family and friends. Shirley retired from Northeast Medical Center after 45 years as a medical records transcriptionist in Medical Records Department.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 PM to 8 PM at Wilkinson Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be held Friday at 3 PM at Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church. Rev. Clark Remsburg will officiate. Interment will follow at Poplar Tent Cemetery. She will be laid to rest beside her husband, Robert Houston Smith who died October 20, 2000. They were high school sweethearts and were married 47 years.
Left to cherish Shirley’s memory are her six children, Mike and wife Dawn, Pat and wife Melanie, Kevin and wife Tracy, Eric and wife Penny, Wesley and wife Kathy and Kimberly Smith Gibson and husband Curt. Also surviving are her 13 grandchildren, Bryan, Kathleen, Josh and Rebecca; Alex; Scott and Lauren; Amber, Melissa and Erica; Walker and Weston; Leslie; great-grandchildren, Tristan, Hannah; Noah, Abby, Liam; Isaac; Caiden, Korra; Tony, Chole, and Kailen and 2 step-grandchildren, Taylor and Audrey.
