Beloved Child of God, joyful Daughter, little Sister, kind and caring Friend, dedicated Wife, loving Mother, wise and generous Grandmother, skilled Educator, avid lover of the Arts and compassionate towards others, Barbara Darlene Clay Muery Davis died in faith Friday, July 28th in Huntsville, Alabama. Darlene experienced God's grace and compassion in departing this world peacefully at the age of 90. Our Mother raised her children to pursue fullness of life with curiosity and integrity, continuously learning and loving, of which she led by example in the presence of God. Barbara Darlene Clay was born May 28, 1933, at La Salano Hospital in El Centro, California to the union of Ernest Edward Clay and Ethel Alice Mason.

As a child, our mother was joyful, adventurous and an outstanding student. Whether roller skating with her brother, her hero, or running around the block with a towel cape as Superman, mother was always on an adventure. In the first grade, Darlene would finish her work before the others and then walk around the classroom, as if she was the teacher, helping others with their work. Her teacher wrote on her report card, "Darlene spends too much of her time helping other students." "I was born a teacher" she often said later in life.

Our Mother was a strong swimmer and became a "California Beach Girl" at an early age, exploring the beautiful California coast from Coronado Beach to La Jolla with her brother. Darlene had a special love for the red brown rock coves and pounding surf of La Jolla and often boldly proclaimed the Pacific Ocean as "my ocean". In June of 1950, Darlene graduated as Salutatorian of her class from Stephen Watts Kearny Junior-Senior High School in San Diego, California. Commencement was held in Ford Bowl at Balboa Park. The yearbook reads, "Vivacious Darlene Clay active in her senior year as both Drill Team Colonel and Editor-in-chief of the '50 Komet, she has had a hand in most activities at Kearny the past six years. She represented K.H.S. at a number of conventions, won prizes in several writing contests and has all this time kept an A average. This versatile, all-around gal is a credit to her class and to the school."

While enrolled in San Diego State University, Darlene met and married Ensign Robert Wilburn Muery in November of 1951 at the navy base chapel. Our Mother postponed her college education to live the married life and start a family. The family camped, hiked, went to museums and walked practically every Civil War battlefield and National Park. There was never a historical marker that we didn't stop for, giving each child the opportunity to read it out loud. In 1956 Darlene and several other founding members played an important role in the formation of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Arlington, TX, holding services in their homes prior to the building of the sanctuary.

At the age of 42, with 6 children, Darlene earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama. Darlene had an impactful career in the application of computer technology in education starting in 1983 with the Huntsville City Schools. She scheduled high school students on the school systems first computer, taught night classes in computer programming and developed the Computer Technology curriculum used throughout the entire school district. Darlene also traveled extensively representing the Huntsville City Schools exemplary Computer and Instructional Technology Department at computer conferences and as a consultant to other school systems. Darlene retired as Director of Instructional Technology, Huntsville City Schools in 1995. She continued to engage in several organizations of education and learning including the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, President/Charter member of the Alabama Council for Technology Education, Huntsville Botanical Gardens, and the Tennessee Valley Genealogical Society among others.

Darlene was a beautiful person, displaying the fruit of the Spirit throughout her life "love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self – control." She was blessed with a loving and compassionate heart, inquisitive mind, thoughtful imagination and a strength for doing what was right. She was selfless and courageous in her sacrifice for her family, had many lasting friendships and was a true friend, always giving of herself. Darlene was gracious and generous, naturally giving to fill the needs of others in unexpected ways. She was discerning and strong yet respectful, recognizing others as God's image bearers, and She was rich in wisdom that was "pure; peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy, impartial and sincere". Darlene sought fullness of life knowing who and what she was in Christ, what she could and could not be, what she could and could not tolerate, and she chose to be vulnerable in this world.

We will forever miss our mother, will carry her in our hearts and minds forever, and will forever love her. We grieve and mourn her death and also celebrate her life, while keeping our confidence in Christ. The Apostle Paul in his first Epistle to the Thessalonians offered encouragement and comfort for believers grieving the loss of loved ones who died in the faith. Paul writes "…we do not want to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that we do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him." 1Th 4:13-14. Amen.

Barbara Darlene Clay Muery Davis is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Ethel Mason Clay, brother, Ernest Eugene "Jeep" Clay and the father of the Muery children, Robert Wilburn Muery.
Darlene leaves her 6 children to celebrate her life and mourn her passing: Ronald Eugene Muery (Ana) of Houston, Tx; Sharon Muery Griffin (Dennis), Carol Diane Muery, Deborah Lynn Muery Solid (Kelly), David Louis Muery (Kim) and Pamela Sue Muery Glidewell (Rocky), all of Huntsville, AL.
Darlene has been blessed with 10 Grandchildren, 2 Great Grandbabies; Maple Everly Hoekman and Max Solid Reynolds; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

A graveside burial service will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, AL August 26, 2023. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift in our mother's name to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Huntsville Botanical Gardens, or Huntsville Museum of Art.
