Private Martin Branham served in Company B of the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry during the Civil War. He was captured in Claiborne County, TN while home on leave and taken to a Union prison at Louisville, KY. Anecdotal accounts say he died of smallpox while a prisoner, but military records state that he took an "Oath of Allegiance" on Dec 18th and was "paroled and sent north of the Ohio River". Either way, he never made it home.
