Richard Eugene Devore, 75, of Indiana Avenue in Chester, died Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center in Columbiana after a brief illness.
Mr. Devore was born on June 5, 1941, in New Matamoras, Ohio, to the late Brady and Ora Mae Patterson Devore. He moved to Chester, where he was well-known as the owner and head of the carefully groomed family land on Middle Run Road. In his later years he moved to Indiana Avenue, where he often walked to Frank's Pastry Shop for his morning turnover or McDonald's for a hot cup of coffee. When asked how he was doing, he was known to respond: "Better than I deserve."
A kind man with a warm smile, Mr. Devore worked as a meat cutter and bowling alley attendant before starting work at National Church Supply and then Penn Power, from which he retired in 2002. Since then, he spent much of his time with his four children, eight grandchildren and 13 siblings, often playing cards and sharing stories from his childhood.
He was a talented euchre, cribbage and poker player who spent many Friday nights with his brother Lester at the Coon Club.
He was a graduate of East Liverpool High School Class of 1960. He attended the First Christian Church in Chester.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Judy (Lynch) Devore, and siblings Norma Jean, Annie, Grace and Clifford.
He is survived by his daughter, Judy Juszczak (Rob); sons, Bill (Lenore), Jerry (Pam) and Rich (Tania); grandchildren, Grace and Claire Juszczak, and Connor, Sydney, Kristen, Thomas, Lori and Micheal Devore; brothers, Lester (Betty) Devore, Boyd (Edna) Devore, Dean (Theresa) Devore,  Brady (Helen) Devore ; sisters, Phyllis (Saul) McCoy, Bonnie (Clete) Miles, Susie (Bil) Lamp, Ada Mae (Dave) Greenwald, Blanche (Pearly) Jones and Lillian (Dempsey) Jones.
