Doris Murphy, age 76 years, a resident of Vienna, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, November 29, 2016, at 11:54 AM at her home.

Doris was born January 4, 1940 in New Haven, Illinois. She was the eldest of three children born to Calvin Bean and Dorothy Margaret (Merritt) Bean.

In December 1955, Doris was united in marriage to Jack Travelstead. He preceded her in death in 1974. On April 4, 1975, Doris was united in marriage to Harold D. Murphy in Carmi. He preceded her in death in 1987.

Doris is survived by: a daughter – Wilma L. (Kenny Schexnayder) Burnett of Carmi; a son – Jack (Phyllis) Travelstead of Metropolis; 2 stepchildren – Bernard (Charlene) Murphy of Galatia and Linda (Gary) Shaw of Dahlgren; 2 grandchildren – Jonathan Travelstead & Makayla Travelstead; and a sister – Velma “Beanie” (Chuck) Cates of Rockwood.

In addition to her husbands, Doris was preceded in death by her parents – Calvin Bean and Dorothy Margaret Jenkins; her stepfather – Dean Jenkins; a grandson – Keith Allen Burnett; a brother – Thomas Bean; a stepson – Ronnie Kirsch; 2 stepdaughters – Brenda Barnett and Bonnie Murphy.

Doris was employed as the supervisor of housekeeping at the former White County Nursing Home in Carmi. She, along with her husband Harold Murphy, had been employed by the Wabash Area Development Council. Later, Doris worked as a home healthcare provider and was employed by the Shawnee Development Council. For many years, Doris worked as a restaurant cook. She was employed by a number of area restaurants, including the former Plantation Restaurant in Vienna. Doris was widely known for her cooking and baking skills. She also enjoyed making hand crafted items. Doris loved re-sale shops. She enjoyed selling, browsing and buying items.

Doris was a faithful member of the Vienna United Pentecostal Church.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, December 3, 2016, at 1 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Burial will be in Union Ridge Cemetery near New Haven.

Visitation will be conducted Saturday, December 3, 2016, from 11 AM – 1 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
