Obituary for Leonard Joseph Schafer
Leonard Joseph Schafer, 76, Wilton, North Dakota, went to his eternal resting place on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at the Baptist Health Care Center, Bismarck. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, November 19, 2016, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wilton, with Rev. Frank Schuster officiating. Visitation is scheduled for 5-7:00 PM, with a Vigil/Rosary service at 7:00 PM, Friday, November 18, 2016, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wilton.

Leonard was born on October 26, 1940 to Jerome and Minnie (Roll) Schafer. He was the middle child of thirteen children. He attended elementary and high school in Flasher, graduating in 1960. Leonard was known for his skill as a football player who was on a mission. This won him a scholarship to further his education. He graduated with a degree in education from UND-Ellendale Branch, Ellendale, ND in 1967. Leonard married Evangelina Nagel in 1962 and they had four children.

Leonard worked construction as a heavy equipment operator for many years while attending college and during the summers of his teaching career. Leonard taught school for nearly thirty years at Ely, NV in the Social Studies Department at White Pine County School District. He served on many education committees as well as accepting the position of president of the teacher’s union for a number of years during which time generous salary raises were realized and numerous notable benefits experienced by his fellow educators. Leonard was a ‘no nonsense kind of guy’ when negotiating teacher benefits.

As a lover of nature, Leonard enjoyed every hunting and fishing season allowed in North Dakota and Nevada; and was very knowledgeable about guns, fishing equipment, wildlife and persons who abused nature. His belief of nature was that it was a gift from God and should be enjoyed, not abused. Leonard passed this love onto his children and grandchildren, who came back to North Dakota to enjoy many hunting seasons and summer vacations.
When Leonard retired from teaching, he moved to Wilton, ND to be near his family. He resided there until 2013 at which time he moved to the Baptist Home at Bismarck, ND due to his ailing health.

He is survived by two daughters, Robin (Glenn) Thompson, Benicia, California, and Renae (Rick) Garcia, Ogden, Utah; son, Todd, Carson City, Nevada; daughter-in-law, Donna Schafer, Roseville, California; three sisters, Phyllis Smith, Bismarck, Delores (Jim) Cain, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Shirley (Ken) Reed, Mandan; five brothers, Lawrence (Sharon), Savanna, Illinois, Arnold (Marilyn), Jamestown, Bernard “Ben” (Linda), Wilton, DuWayne (Gladeen), West Fargo, and Gordon, Bismarck; grandchildren, Jessica and Savanna Wooten, Garrett, Derek, Colton, Kyle and Jason Schafer, Rico, Nicholas and Kayla Garcia; numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, son, Troy; brothers, Dan, Leo, Matt, and Herman. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Leonard’s memory, please make the donation to the Sacred Heart Church Building Fund, Wilton, ND.
