Reverend Monsignor Michael Joseph Morrissey, 77, a priest of the Diocese of Davenport, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 29, 2016 of cancer. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1923 Fillmore Street, Davenport. Visitation will be at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 N. Main Street, downtown Davenport Friday, December 2nd from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 pm. There will be additional visitation Saturday at the church from 8:30 a.m. until the Mass time. Burial will be in the Priests’ Circle at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.
 
Msgr. Morrissey, son of John J., Sr. and C. Margaret (Kenny) Morrissey, was born at Davenport, Iowa on October 5, 1939. He attended St. Ambrose Academy and St. Ambrose College (’61) and Mt. St. Bernard Seminary, earning his M.A. in Theology in 1964. He was ordained at Holy Family Church, Davenport, on June 5, 1965 by Bishop Ralph L. Hayes. He obtained his Canon Law degree from Catholic University of America in 1971.
 
Most of Monsignor Morrissey’s service was in diocesan administration. He served as Officialis of the diocesan tribunal and also as Chancellor and then Vicar General. He had specific assignment to parishes: St. Mary, Ottumwa; St. Anthony, Davenport; St. Peter, Buffalo; Ss. Philip and James, Grand Mound, and St. John Vianney, Bettendorf. His last assignment was as pastor of Holy Family Parish in Davenport from which he retired in 2008 for health reasons.
 
He served on the St. Ambrose University Board of Directors; he was a member of the Canon Law Society of America and had served on its Board of Directors; he was a Consultor for the Diocese of Davenport, had served on the Presbyteral Council and the Board of Directors of St. Vincent’s Home. He was a charter member of the International Oak Society.
 
Memorials may be made to All Saints Catholic School, Davenport, or the Priests’ Aid Society.
 
Msgr. Morrissey is survived by his brothers, John (Helen), Bettendorf and Timothy (Susan), Davenport; sister-in-law, Barbara, Grand Mound, IA, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father John (1989), his brother Patrick (2006), and his mother Margaret (2013).
