HAROLD EDWARD ROPER, passed away on November 28, 2016, at the age of 96, in Beckley, West Virginia.

Mr. Roper was born and raised in Macon County, North Carolina, graduating from Franklin High school. After graduation, he worked with his brother-in-law Martin Angel in construction of rural post offices throughout the south. In 1942, Mr. Roper enlisted into the U.S. Coast Guard and was discharged in November 1945, where, Mr. Roper was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. During World War II, Mr. Roper was assigned shore patrol duty at the U.S. Coast Guard Facility in Long Island, New York. Mr. Roper, was reassigned as a medic and pharmacist mate on the U.S.S. General H.L. Scott (AP-136), whereby, the U.S.S. General Scott, steamed via the Suez Canal to Calcutta, India, and Colombo, Ceylon, on "Magic-Carpet" duty to transport troops back to the United States.

After World War II, Mr. Roper attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, on the newly formed GI Bill, where he received a BS degree in Pharmacy in 1949. After graduation, Mr. Roper started his pharmacy career in Florida, working retail pharmacy. Mr. Roper moved back to Macon County, North Carolina, working at Angel Drugs. He subsequently, owned and operated Ideal Pharmacy, in Sweetwater, Tennessee. Seeing a chance to return to the sunshine state, Mr. Roper returned to Florida and was selected, in 1967, as the Pharmacy Officer, at the U.S. Air Force Hospital, Patrick Air Force Base, Florida. There, Mr. Roper was instrumental in modernizing the pharmacy to ensure that patient care was a top priority, until his retirement in 1983. Afterwards, Mr. Roper, continued working as a pharmacist for local pharmacies. Mr. Roper, took a position with CVS Pharmacy in Winston Salem, North Carolina, where he worked until retirement in 1983, at the age of 73. Mr. Roper was beloved by all those who had the privilege of working with him, as well as his countless patients.

Mr. Roper is predeceased by his father, John C. Roper and mother, Hyacinth Mae Roper, brothers; John Roper; Claude Roper; Wiley Roper; sisters, Aileen Angel and her husband Martin Angel and Bertie McFalls all of Macon County, North Carolina and grandson, Keith Edward Roper.

Mr. Roper is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Genevieve Redden, of New, West Virginia; four children; Ronald Wayne Roper of Shady Springs, West Virginia, Michael Edward Roper (Kellie Jo) of Hindman, Kentucky; Susan Parson of Shady Springs, West Virginia; Timothy Andrew Roper and (Marian) of Franklinton, Louisiana. Fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Roper is survived by two special nieces, Lorrine Corbin and Betty McKay, both of Franklin, North Carolina.

Funeral services will be conducted at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Friday December 2, 2016 at 2 PM with Brother Danny Winders officiating.

Burial will follow at Redden Memorial Gardens at Bragg, WV.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.
