He is listed on the 1800 census Greenville, South Carolina, married with one child, a daughter.
By 1805 he is living in Pickens County, South Carolina and is married or living with Native american "Belvidy". Believe her name is Belvidere, as two of John's sons named daughters

On February 23, 1823 John married Nancy Elizabeth Warren in Habersham County, Georgia. In 1830 the family was in Carroll County, Georgia.
Between 1835 and 1840 John, Nancy and their two sons moved to Franklin County, Alabama. Wofford Gilley is found in Franklin 1840 and it is believe his father and stepmother arrived shortly after.this census.
1845 John and Wofford are both found on the Mississippi State Census, next to each other; John listed with three males and three females. Wofford listed with two males and 4 females.
By 1850 John has died and Nancy is listed as widow,
