Donald J. Coon, 87, of Adrian passed away Nov. 25, 2016, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Lenawee.
Donald was born on Jan. 26, 1929, in Morenci, to John T. and Margurite (Kiner) Coon. He was a graduate of Adrian High School. On Nov. 8, 1974, he married Girture Hammack in Morenci at the pastor's home.
In 1993 Don retired from American Chain and Cable after 35 years of service in research and development. He attended First Freewill Baptist Church and was a former member of the Nazarene Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent. He was a former Big Reds football player, loved gardening and flowers, was an avid fisherman, bowler, golfer, softball player, and loved all sports but especially football. He enjoyed camping, but above all, family was most important to him.
In addition to his wife, Girt, he is survived by his children, Stephen J. (Linda) Coon of Adrian, Michael (Oda) Coon of Sand Creek, Sheryl (Derek) Lloyd of Kentucky, Ray Hammack of Oregon, Jimmie (Arthur) Moore of Alabama, Danny (Nancy) Hammack of Adrian, Kathy (Ray) Casey of Tecumseh and Karen (Manuel) Vallejo of Adrian; 24 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his sister Carol's friend, Robert Watkins.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Naomi Coon and Carol Coon Ellsworth; Alma Coon, his first wife; great-granddaughter, McKenna Kreischer; and his special canine companion, Toby.
Funeral services for Don will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, at Wagley Funeral Home, Adrian, with the Rev. Darrell Hyder officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Morenci.
