Douglas Warren Hawkins, 82, of Parsonsfield died on November 21, 2016 at Gorham House in Gorham after a long illness. 

He was born in Kansas City, MO. on December 27, 1933 a son of Frank and Margaret (Brown) Hawkins.  He was a 1952 graduate of Winchester High School in Winchester, Mass.  He graduated from Amherst College in 1956 with a degree in English.  He lettered in basketball at Amherst where he set school records that still stand 60 years later.  He went on to recieve his Masters in Education from the University of Southern California. 
 
He served 24 years in the United States Air Force retiring as a Colonel.  He was proud to serve as an Air Commando, flying combat with distinction in Vietnam.  After his retirement from the Air Force, he moved to Parsonsfield, ME. in 1980.  He commuted to work at the Mitre Corporation in Bedford, Mass. for 15 years where he was a Project Head for Research and Developement. 
 
Douglas went back to college at S.M.T.C. in South Portland where he received 2 more degrees, one in Plumbing and Heating and the other in Hotel Management and Culinary Arts.  He worked part time at Corsetti's Store on Rt. 302 for a couple of years.  He also volunteered cooking for several years at the soup kitchen in Portland. 
 
He served as Selectman for the Town of Parsonsfield for twelve years.  He always enjoyed flying, even having a flight simulator in his home.  Doug liked tinkering on various projects and home improvements in his spare time.  He was also an avid reader and very well informed with world issues and town politics, as well as loving sports, enjoying the Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox.  Above all, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
 
Surviving are his wife of almost 50 years, M. Joan Hawkins of Parsonsfield.  3 sons: Stephen Douglas Hawkins (retired Marine Corps) and wife Kristina of Sugarland, TX., Gregory Scott Hawkins and wife Bernadette of Rocklin, CA. and Robert Jeffrey Hawkins (retired Marine Corps) and girlfriend Erin Washburn, both of South Portland.   Four grandchildren, Aiden and Colin Hawkins, and Emily and Sophia Hawkins.  Also his sister, Judy Allen of Virginia, and a very good friend, Ann Quinn, also of Virginia.
 
An hour of visitation will be on Wednesday, Nov. 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. immediately followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Watson, Neal & York Funeral Home, 71 Maple Street, Cornish. 

Burial with military honors will take place on Monday, December 5, at 1 p.m. at the Southern Maine Veteran's Cemetery in Springvale.
