Grandmaster and World Champion, Asa Long is known as "The Iron Man" of checkers. Through friendly games played with his father and grandfather Asa became attracted to the game of checkers at an early age, at 16 he entered the Ohio State Checkers Tourney winning his first Ohio State Championship title. In October,1920 Asa played in the 5th U.S. Open, (Boston, MA) he won the tournament, making him the youngest ever (18 years,64 days) to win the National Championship. In 1980, he won again at age 76! making him the oldest player ever to win the title. On July 21, 1984 in Tupelo, MS Asa broke his own record, winning his last national title at the age of 79 years 334 days. These records still stand and are recorded in the Guiness Book of World Records. (1995 edition, page 236)
Asa A. Long was also World Champion 1934-1938.
