James Kenneth Smith, “Jim”, was born on November 19, 1933 in Goodland, Kansas. He was the third son of Harry S. and Veta (Clonch) Smith.
He departed this life on Thursday November 24, 2016 at Vintage Park in Wamego, Kansas.
Jim was educated in the Goodland schools, and was given the opportunity to work at the First National Bank in Goodland while he was a teenager to learn the banking business. His co-workers affectionately referred to him as the “baby banker.” This experience resulted in a lifetime career in banking, including serving as president of the First National Bank in Burlington, Colorado, and later the First National Bank in Herington, Kansas. Jim later moved to Lake Elbo Community near Manhattan. He served on the board as president during his three year term. He worked for Briggs Motors until his retirement.
Jim and Ruth Martin were married in 1951, to this union two children were born: James Martin Smith and Robyn Deann Smith.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Loren Robert Smith, who was a casualty of World War II as a nineteen-year old sailor; and also by his daughter Robyn, who died in an auto accident at the age of fifteen.
In 1988 he married Kay Page. She survives at their home in Manhattan.
Jim is also survived by his son, Jim Smith; Kay’s children: Brenda Packard (Lloyd), Merl Page (Brenda), and Lori Willyard (Harry); his brother Bobby Lee Smith (Mary); his sister Shirley Miller (Richard), and also his many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jim was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed.
The family will greet friends during a visitation from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday November 27, 2016 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday November 28, 2016 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Devin Wendt officiating. Cremation will follow the service and private inurnment will be held at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Crestview Christian Church or the Lake Elbo Club. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
