Lila Gray was the daughter of Virginia Ruth Vann and William McNeal Branch, Sr. She grew up attending First Baptist Church on Old and Anderson Streets in Fayetteville, NC. On Dec. 18, 1912, she married Francis Boyd Peele at the home of her mother in Fayetteville, NC. They lived in Scotland County, NC. Lila died of meningitis when her daughter was one month old. Her daughter was raised for some time by Lila's sister, Callie Branch Hilburn and her husband.
