Lester Cyril Simkins was listed Missing in Action on 7 February 1943, near Esperitu Santo Island, New Hebrides (now Vanuatu).
He was a Private First Class, United States Marine Corp, assigned to USMC unit VMD-154, MAG-15, SERVGR, MAW, FMF.
Lester was a crew member on a PB4-Y-1, Bureau #31958, which crashed into the sea after take-off one-half mile off the coast of Espiritu Santo. The plane sank in 95 fathoms of water. No trace of the crew was ever found.
He was awarded a Purple Heart for valor, and his name is inscribed on Court 4, Courts of the Missing, National Cemetary of the Pacific, Oahu, Hawaii.
He was only 19 years old, and he was my father's brother.
