Mary H. Roe, age 83, Casa Grande, AZ, formerly of Clark, the widow of Joe Roe, died peacefully with family at her side on Friday, November 25, 2016 under hospice care.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 17, 2017 at the Furness Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Elder “Buzz” Grover of Hill City officiating. A private family interment will be held at the Rose Hill Cemetery at Clark prior to services as Mary along with her husband Joe will be buried near the Altfillisch family plots.
She was born February 20, 1933 in Clark, the daughter of Leigh and Velda (Moser) Altfillisch. Mary attended Clark High School and later in life Mary obtained her GED, an accomplishment she was very proud of.
Mary married Donald “Corky” Flanagan and to this union three children were born, Debra, Michele, and Michael. The family lived in California. They later divorced and Mary moved to Hawaii after raising her children.
In 1976, Mary moved back to Clark to manage the family business. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Joseph “Joe” Roe. They were married April 26, 1980 at Lake Tahoe. The couple lived in Clark for several years where she owned and managed a clothing boutique, “The Clothes Closet.”
After leaving South Dakota, Mary and Joe worked at various ski resorts and motels/hotels in Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Hawaii and Arizona. For the past several years they lived and worked in Casa Grande, AZ during the winter months and Hill City, SD during the summers. Joe died in 2011. Mary continued working in Hill City until October 2016. She was diagnosed with cancer shortly after that.
Mary enjoyed making pottery and then golfing in her spare time. She loved horses and cats, especially her cat, Buttons. She liked camping and being in her camper. Mary had an amazing green thumb with gardening, crafting, cooking, and hosting gatherings for family and friends. Mary was many things but most of all she was a happy and loving person who was generous of her time, open to any new adventure and she never judged. All who knew her loved her as she was “a special and awesome person.”
Preceding her in death were her parents, a sister in infancy, her husband, daughter Michele, a son-in-law, a grandson, a brother-in-law, and a nephew.
Mary is survived by her daughter Debra Flanagan Williams of Kauai, Hawaii; son Michael Flanagan of San Bernadino, California; grandson Dennis Williams, great granddaughters Amber Williams and Olivia Williams, granddaughter Danica Williams, and grandson Shaun Michael LeClerc. She is also survived by siblings Bill (Dianne) Altfillisch, Kay Flanagan and Wayne “Buster” (Sandy) Altfillisch and many nieces and nephews.
