Born Nov. 20, 1950, in Lewistown, he was a son of Betty L. (Ruble) Heckendorn, of Lewistown, and the late William I. Heckendorn. His wife, Carol A. (Worley) Heckendorn, whom he married May 16, 1970, survives.
Also surviving are children, Jason J. Heckendorn and wife, Molly, Siglerville, and Jodi A. Heckendorn, at home; a sister, Mrs. Michael (Jane) Hesketh, Reedsville; and two grandchildren, Sage M. Heckendorn and Christopher G. Heckendorn.
He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher J. Heckendorn, and a brother, Jerry Lee Heckendorn.
He was a 1969 graduate of Lewistown High School.
He was a salesperson for Maurice Sporting Goods before retiring on disability in 1992. Prior to that he was a salesman for Fosselman's, Jamesway and American General.
He was a member of Grove Memorial United Methodist Church, and a member of BPOE Lodge No. 663 where he served as exalted ruler from 1995 to 1996. He also was a member of Brooklyn Hose Co.
He was a little league baseball coach and a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, the outdoors, coin collecting, playing cards, and he adored his grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grove Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. D. Gregory Lake officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery.
